Earthing & Lightning Protection Standards

The standards that govern earthing and lightning protection design in India, what each one covers, and where it applies — a reference for consultants, contractors and project engineers specifying an earthing installation.

Governing Standards

Summaries of scope and applicability. Always design against the current published revision of the standard and the project specification.

Code of Practice for Earthing

The principal Indian standard for earthing installations. Covers earthing system design, choice and installation of electrodes, earth resistance requirements, protective conductors, bonding, and measurement and testing of earth resistance.

Where it applies: Cited in the majority of Indian electrical specifications and tender documents. Earthing designs for industrial, commercial and distribution installations are normally required to conform to it.

IEC 62305International Electrotechnical Commission

Protection Against Lightning

Published in four parts — general principles; risk management; physical damage to structures and life hazard; and protection of electrical and electronic systems within structures. Defines lightning protection levels and the design of air termination, down conductor and earth termination systems.

Where it applies: The reference standard for lightning protection design. Part 2 governs the risk assessment that determines whether protection is required and to what protection level.

IEC 62561International Electrotechnical Commission

Lightning Protection System Components

Requirements and testing for the components of a lightning protection system — connection components, conductors and earth electrodes, earth termination seals, test joints, and enclosures.

Where it applies: The standard against which individual earthing and LPS components are tested. Useful when specifying or comparing electrodes, clamps and connectors on a like-for-like basis.

IEC 60364International Electrotechnical Commission

Low-Voltage Electrical Installations

Requirements for low-voltage installations, including earthing arrangements (TN, TT and IT systems), protective conductors, equipotential bonding and protection against electric shock.

Where it applies: Governs how the earthing system integrates with the wider electrical installation, and defines the earthing system classifications referenced in most designs.

Method

Designing a Compliant Earthing System

The sequence a compliant design follows, whatever the installation type.

  1. 1

    Soil resistivity survey

Measure resistivity at the site before anything is specified. It is the single largest variable in earthing design and determines electrode type, length and quantity.

  2. 2

    Set the target earth resistance

Take the required value from the governing standard and the project specification. It varies by installation type and must not be assumed from a rule of thumb.

  3. 3

    Select electrode type and configuration

Match material to soil aggressiveness and required design life, then calculate how many electrodes in parallel are needed to reach the target, spaced at least their driven length apart.

  4. 4

    Specify joints and bonding

Buried and inaccessible joints should be permanent connections. Bond the lightning protection earth to the main earthing system rather than isolating it.

  5. 5

    Test and record

Measure earth resistance on completion to confirm the design value, record the reading and site conditions, then re-test periodically and trend the results.

A note on earth resistance values

Target earth resistance is not a single universal number. It varies by installation type — generating stations and large substations are held to the lowest values, distribution and general industrial installations to intermediate values, and lightning protection systems to a value commonly specified as 10 ohms or less. Take the figure that applies to your project from the governing standard and the consultant’s design, not from a general reference. We are glad to review a specification with you.

Products for Standards-Compliant Installations

ELOX manufactures earthing electrodes, rods, chambers, accessories and complete lightning protection systems for installations designed to these standards. Send us your specification and we will confirm which products meet it.

  • Earthing electrodes — GI, copper bonded, pure copper

  • FRP and concrete earthing pit chambers
  • Conventional and ESE lightning protection
  • Exothermic welding systems
  • Earthing design, installation and testing

This page summarises the scope of the referenced standards for guidance. It is not a substitute for the standards themselves, which should be obtained from the publishing body and applied in their current revision. Related: technical FAQ · compare electrode types.
